The conference
The Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) are pleased to announce 'Social Science Perspectives on the 2008 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey', a conference to be held at The Australian National University in Canberra over two days on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 April 2011.
The conference brings together some leading social scientists writing on Indigenous issues in Australia and internationally, including speakers from the World Bank, Stanford University (US) and Waikato University (NZ).
The conference is generously supported by the Australian National University (ANU), Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA). CAEPR is grateful for this support, which will allow participation by some leading international researchers in the field. It will also assist us in maximising engagement with the full range of our stakeholders through affordable registration fees.
Initiating a conversation
The main aim of the conference is to initiate a conversation between stakeholders and academics about data and the research required to enhance the social science evidence base around Indigenous wellbeing and socioeconomic disadvantage. Over the two days of the conference, papers will be presented by leading researchers covering a wide range of topics including: child development, crime and justice, culture, the customary economy, demography, education, employment, fertility, health, housing, income and financial stress, mobility, poverty, social exclusion, substance abuse and, last but not least, wellbeing.
The contributors to the conference have been set three goals or challenges:
- to generate new scientific findings and analysis for the allocated topic;
- to demonstrate how the data source utilised advances social science and informs Indigenous policy making; and
- where possible, offer specific suggestions for how best to implement policy changes based on the findings.
Meeting these goals is an essential part of this conference; key participants include policymakers with responsibility for the carriage of Indigenous policy. Invited overseas speakers will provide a broader context for the conversation by providing their perspective on international ‘best practice’.
